
A native of Spain, José Andrés is chef/owner of ThinkFoodGroup, and with partner Rob Wilder, is the team responsible for popular dining destinations in Washington DC, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami and soon Puerto Rico. ThinkFoodGroup oversees all of José’s creative endeavors such as cookbooks, television programming, concept consulting and project development. José was named Outstanding Chef of the Year at the 2011 James Beard Foundation Awards and was named among the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine in 2012. Recently he was named Dean of the Spanish Studies program at the International Culinary Center.

José Andrés will unveil his very first cocktail-centric concept on February 15, barmini by José Andrés, a hub of chef-driven libations that will pay homage to the golden era of cocktails and forgotten techniques. Located in Washington’s Penn Quarter at 855 E Street NW, adjacent to minibar, barmini will serve as José’s cocktail lab for all of his restaurants and projects. Barmini will be open for cocktails and bar snacks Tuesday through Thursday, from 6PM – 1AM, and Friday and Saturday, from 6PM – 2AM. José Andrés’ selection for the Robb Report Culinary Masters competition, chef Katie Button has just been named the 2013 winner. Katie began her culinary career at Café Atlántico in Washington, DC and later The Bazaar by José Andrés at the SLS Hotel Beverly Hills. Having fallen in love with Spanish cuisine, she then moved to Spain and began a 7 month stage at el Bulli. Immediately following her internship she moved to North Carolina and opened Curate Spanish Tapas Bar. From the beginning, José saw great promise in this rising young chef. Starting this Spring, Jose will be teaching a course at The George Washington University! The course entitled, “The World on a Plate: How Food Shapes Civilization,” will examine various intersections of food and society and is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Jose will teach the course as well as welcome guest lecturers and GW faculty including Andrew Zimmern of the Travel Channel series “Bizarre Foods”; Harold McGee, author of On Food and Cooking; Alice Kamps, who curated the National Archives exhibit “What’s Cooking Uncle Sam?”; and Philip Derfler, the deputy administrator for the Food Safety and Inspection Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. José Andrés discusses his new role as Dean of the Spanish Studies program of the International Culinary Center with The New York Times. The curriculum developed by José Andrés and Colman Andrews will consist of a 10 week extensive program that will provide students with comprehensive knowledge of Spanish cuisine and products and will culminate with a week-long culinary excursion to Spain with Jose himself. José Andrés was named “Outstanding Chef” by the James Beard Foundation at their annual awards gala in New York on May 9th. Recently named “Hot Restaurateur” by Conde Nast Traveler, José served as one of the Chef Co-Chairs for the awards gala, considered the food world’s Oscars. This award is the culmination of a busy year for José during which he successfully opened three new restaurants at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, taught at Harvard as part of a course “Science and Cooking” and launched new nonprofit World Central Kitchen dedicated to fighting global hunger.

José is once again up for the culinary world’s top prize! The chef has been nominated “Outstanding Chef” by the James Beard Foundation for his work at minibar by josé andrés. In addition, the “60 Minutes” segment on José has been nominated “Best Television Segment”. The JBF awards ceremony will be held May 9th at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC.
